The State has more than 88.93 % of its geographical area under forest cover. Out of this, bamboo occupy 6,446 sq.km area, which is around 30% of the total land area of the State.

Out of 6,446 sq.km, Melocanna Baccifera covers 5,801 sq.km, which is around 90% of the area.

There are about 20 species of bamboos which occur naturally in the State.

As per Bamboos of Mizoram (2010) prepared by Environment & Forest Department, Government of Mizoram, 35 species under 9 genera have been reported.

As per Operational Guidelines of National Bamboo Mission (Revised on June, 2019), area of Earlier NBM Bamboo Plantation in Mizoram is 38,601 ha in Forest area and  16,572 ha in Non Forest Area
